Sibtain Nandjy is the Director of Pharmaceutical Compliance and Clinical Risk Management at Langdale Care Homes. With a master’s degree in pharmacy and over a decade of experience as a pharmacist store manager, he brings extensive expertise to his role. Here, Sibtain shares his insights on medication safety, compliance, and the importance of fostering a culture of accountability in the care sector.
My work focuses on driving compliance practices and safety standards to ensure Langdale residents receive the highest quality of care. I am passionate about fostering a culture of accountability and excellence across all of Langdale’s homes.
Since joining Langdale Care Homes, I have strived to transform medication management practices by introducing rigorous compliance protocols and innovative training programmes. Accuracy in medication management is crucial in the care sector, and we collaborated closely with healthcare professionals, families, GPs, and pharmacies to establish a network that enables seamless communication and safe, efficient care. In elderly care, where polypharmacy is common, any error—no matter how small—can have serious consequences, so we take every precaution to ensure accuracy.
One of our early initiatives was introducing a meticulous medication reconciliation process. By reviewing and reconciling medications during admissions and routine checks, we have significantly reduced the potential for errors. This process also includes robust tracking of prescription changes from hospitals and primary care, often a source of discrepancies. As a result, Langdale Care Homes has set a benchmark for attention to detail in medication safety, maintaining an exemplary record in the care sector.
We also developed a comprehensive training programme for our staff. Beyond the basics, I’ve educated them on the critical importance of each step in medication administration, from timing to handling. This has empowered Langdale’s healthcare staff to administer medications confidently and accurately. The results have been tangible: medication-related incidents are now rare, and staff feel more connected to the outcomes of their work, understanding their vital role in resident well-being.
Beyond the operations, we are dedicated to the well-being of our residents and staff. I hold frequent discussions with the care team to address concerns and celebrate achievements, creating an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered. This culture of open communication has boosted staff morale and led to better resident care, reinforcing a strong sense of teamwork across all Langdale care homes.
Recognising that proper documentation is vital to medication safety, we have implemented a digital record-keeping system that streamlined our processes, reducing the need for paperwork and supporting the company’s green initiatives. This system has improved efficiency by providing caregivers with quicker, more informed access to essential information, ensuring that queries are identified and resolved swiftly to promote a safer environment for Langdale’s residents.
I am proud to be able to say that Langdale Care Homes has excelled in pharmaceutical compliance and medication management, enhancing safety and trust. Together we have fostered a supportive environment for residents, staff, and families. Our work demonstrates the impact of compassionate leadership in the care sector, raising standards and inspiring excellence throughout the industry.
