Bury St Edmunds care home residents enjoy endless ice-cream supply

Facilities Manager David serves ice-cream at the RMBI Care Co. Home Cornwallis Court’s new kiosk in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

What is summer without ice-cream? Residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Cornwallis Court, in Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk), enjoy having a frozen delicacy whilst basking in the sun. To support their wellbeing, the care home has installed an ice-cream kiosk for residents to enjoy ice-cream all summer.

The kiosk was built and painted by Cornwallis Court’s Facilities Manager, David, with support from other staff members. “Seeing our plan come to life has given us the utmost pleasure,” says Facilities Manager David. “Our residents have been in the courtyard, mixing and socialising, and the queues to get ice-cream have been amazing! I hope the kiosk lasts for many years.”

This was a donation from the Home’s Association of Friends, an independent charity that supports Cornwallis Court by befriending residents and fundraising initiatives. The donation also allowed the Home to buy the kiosk’s freezer as well as olive trees to decorate the area.

Plans for the future

RMBI Care Co. is investing £16m to build a new care home on the site of its current Home, Cornwallis Court, which received an ‘Outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission in August 2023.

With a sustainable approach in mind, the new care home will be designed and created to meet the changing needs of older people. The latest technologies will be available to support up to 64 people with residential care, nursing and residential dementia care.

The layout will include four house groups to create a more homely environment. Each space will feature 16 bedrooms with full en-suite wet rooms, varied communal spaces and an enclosed landscape garden to support residents’ health and wellbeing.
