Connecting Cultures: Rosemary’s 30 Years of Support for Diverse Carers

How Rosemary Stephen, Care and Support Worker at social care charity Making Space, has spent 30 years empowering communities and carers through her dedication and service.

For over 30 years, Rosemary Stephen has been a cornerstone of Making Space’s Doncaster Carers Support Service, dedicating her life to empowering carers from diverse backgrounds. Her unwavering compassion, cultural understanding, and innovative approach have made a profound difference to countless lives, particularly within BAME communities. Rosemary’s efforts to bring South Asian women out of isolation and into the community have encouraged empowerment, connection, and independence, making her an irreplaceable force for good.

Rosemary’s work is rooted in her deep understanding of the barriers faced by carers, especially those within minority communities. Fluent in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi, she has been instrumental in breaking down language barriers, ensuring that South Asian women, who might otherwise remain isolated, can access the support they need. She has developed tailored support groups that respect cultural traditions and languages, creating safe and welcoming spaces for individuals to share experiences, seek advice, and build lasting relationships.

One of Rosemary’s most impactful initiatives has been establishing groups focused on improving English language and literacy skills. These groups have enabled carers to gain qualifications, boost their confidence, and achieve greater independence. Rosemary celebrates every achievement, no matter how small, creating an environment of encouragement and empowerment. Her dedication to celebrating these milestones underscores her belief that every step forward is worth acknowledging.

Rosemary’s approach goes far beyond traditional caregiving. She actively encourages the people she supports to participate in community activities, building a sense of belonging and integration. Whether it’s organising creative arts programs, music workshops, or practical skills sessions like food and hygiene courses, Rosemary’s initiatives are designed to meet the unique needs of individuals while bringing them together. For example, she has facilitated group cooking sessions where participants share recipes from their childhoods, creating a community that learns, supports, and celebrates diverse cultures.

Her ability to identify and address the unique needs of carers has led to the development of numerous innovative programs. These include health and wellbeing workshops, stress and anxiety awareness sessions, and even beauty qualifications, a skill she learned herself to better support others. Rosemary’s tireless efforts have not only equipped carers with practical tools but have also built confidence and independence, transforming lives in the process.

Rosemary’s commitment to her work is deeply personal. Inspired by her mother, who organised medical support for underserved families in Pakistan, Rosemary has carried forward a legacy of compassion and action. She believes that waiting for people to seek help isn’t enough; instead, she actively reaches out to those in need, embodying the very essence of community care. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: if you have the ability to help others, you should do it.

The impact of Rosemary’s work extends beyond the individuals she supports. Her efforts have transformed the culture within Making Space and the broader community. She has guided colleagues, volunteers, and the people they support to see the bigger picture, fostering a collective commitment to building strong, compassionate communities. The networks she has created, connecting individuals and groups who might otherwise remain isolated are a testament to her vision and leadership.

Rosemary’s work has been described as life-changing by those she supports. A carer once shared, “Rosemary is a woman of grace and resilience. She embodies the very essence of kindness and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege of knowing her.” This sentiment reflects the deep respect and admiration Rosemary has earned through her unwavering dedication.

Her ability to inspire others has also made a lasting impact on Making Space as an organisation. Rosemary’s innovative programs and compassionate leadership have set a benchmark for values-based caregiving, aligning perfectly with the organisation’s vision of putting wellbeing at the heart of health and social care. Her efforts have created a ripple effect, inspiring colleagues and volunteers to embrace a culture of support and inclusion.

Rosemary’s legacy is one of transformation, not only for the individuals she supports but for the communities she serves. Her tireless commitment has made her a beacon of hope and inspiration. As a compassionate leader, a cultural bridge-builder, and an advocate for those who often go unheard, Rosemary exemplifies the transformative power of kindness and dedication. Through her work, she has proven that one person’s unwavering commitment can truly change the world.
