Emma Lewell-Buck MP sees power of social care at specialist Voyage Care brain injury home.

South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck

Voyage Care – one of the country’s leading care providers for those with learning disabilities, autism, brain injuries, and complex needs – proudly welcomed South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck to view its new specialist residential care home, Cleadon Court.

During her visit, Mrs Lewell-Buck engaged with Voyage Care colleagues and some of its newest housemates, gaining valuable insights into the care provided at the home, designed for specialist brain injury rehabilitation. Mrs Lewell-Buck was given a comprehensive tour of Cleadon Court by June Smith, Service Manager, showcasing the home’s state-of-the-art facilities and person-centred approach to care and support.

Cleadon Court is designed to support 13 adults with brain injuries. All rooms are conveniently located on the ground floor, ensuring ease of access for individuals with additional accessibility needs. The home also boasts several homely communal spaces, including a spacious lounge and dining area, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

A key feature of Cleadon Court are its five self-contained apartments, designed to facilitate the transition to more independent living for those ready for the next step in their rehabilitation journey. This approach aligns with Voyage Care’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and autonomy of the people they support.

Despite facing nationwide challenges such as recruitment issues, funding pressures, and the cost-of-living crisis, the adult social care sector remains deeply committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need. Voyage Care is dedicated to overcoming these obstacles with innovative solutions and unwavering compassion, so that every individual receives the support they deserve.

Through its ‘Fulfilling Lives for All’ manifesto, Voyage Care is campaigning to tackle these issues by developing a consistent and efficient approach to how councils commission social care that will improve the lives of those in need of support. The care provider also wants to raise the status of those working in the adult social care system to ensure there is parity of esteem with nurses in the NHS.

Vicki Bennett, Operations Director at Voyage Care said: “We are delighted to have welcomed Emma Lewell-Buck MP to Cleadon Court. The visit was an excellent opportunity to showcase the life-changing support we provide and the dedication of our highly skilled team. We remain steadfast in our mission to advocate for those we support and to drive positive change in the adult social care sector.”

Following the visit, Emma Lewell-Buck MP, said: “I was delighted to meet the diligent and attentive Voyage Care team at Cleadon Court and to learn a little bit more about the vital role that specialist care plays in rehabilitation, especially after something as life-altering as a brain injury.

“It was a privilege to spend time with patients and staff and, as a former social worker, it has further reinforced my steadfast commitment to stand up for care services in South Shields.”
