Reflecting on 2024 for The Care Workers’ Charity

Karolina Gerlich, Chief Executive, The Care Workers’ Charity

As we approach the festive season and the year comes to an end, it’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration. As the festive season approaches, most people look forward to time spent with loved ones, favorite meals, and well-earned breaks. However, for many care workers, the holiday season often means more time on the job, ensuring people drawing on social care have a safe, comfortable, and joyous holiday season themselves. While others rest, care workers continue their work, providing companionship, support, and care. I wanted to take this opportunity to not only look back on the achievements of the past year but also to acknowledge the incredible dedication of care workers across the UK.

2024 has been a big year for us at The Care Workers’ Charity, especially in terms of bringing care worker voices into policy, research and practice discussions. One of the major highlights of this year was the launch of our groundbreaking Care Worker Advisory Board and Champions Project. This initiative marks a new chapter in amplifying the voices of care workers and ensuring that their expertise and experiences shape the future of the sector. The Board is composed of care workers from across the UK, who bring their invaluable insights to the table, driving policy changes, and advocating for the improvements needed within the care sector.

The launch event, held at the prestigious House of Lords, was a great success, with care workers, policymakers, and sector leaders coming together to celebrate this ambitious and forward-thinking project. By giving care workers, a platform to share their stories and concerns, we are helping to shape a future where their contributions are fully recognised and supported.

This led directly to our first exciting project with the board: a series of roundtable discussions on the formation of a National Care Service (NCS). These sessions successfully brought together care workers, sector leaders, providers, local authorities, unpaid carers, and people who draw on social care. By fostering collaboration, we ensured that care workers’ perspectives were front and center, shaping the practical implementation of the NCS. We’re thrilled to continue working with our board on projects that dive into social care and make a real impact in the sector.

Another significant milestone this year was Professional Care Workers’ Week 2024, which brought together representatives from over 50 care sector organisations to discuss the pressing issues facing the industry. The week-long event was filled with insightful discussions, and networking opportunities that fostered a sense of solidarity across the sector. Key topics of discussion included the ethical use of AI in social care, fair wages, and the ongoing need for better working conditions. The conversations during Professional Care Workers’ Week highlighted both the challenges and the resilience of the sector, further underscoring the need for continued advocacy and support. This annual event has become a cornerstone of our efforts to unite the sector, share knowledge, and push for systemic change that benefits all care workers.

As we look ahead to 2025, we remain committed to our mission of providing financial, emotional, and practical support to care workers. We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey this year. Whether you attended one of our events, took part in a fundraiser, or simply supported us from afar, your contributions have been appreciated. A special thank you to the care workers who have shared their expertise with us through Professional Care Workers’ Week, as members of the Advisory Board and Champions Project, and those who lent their voices to other roundtables. Your insights have been invaluable.

From all of us at The Care Workers’ Charity, we wish you a joyful festive season and look forward to another year of progress, partnership, and purpose in 2025!
