Celebrate charity fundraising

Shropshire Care Home staff climb The Wrekin for Help For Heroes

A dedicated team of walkers from Telford Hall Care Home in Shropshire have raised vital funds for Help For Heroes following a sponsored climb of The Wrekin.

The team of four met at the base of The Wrekin on Saturday 29th June, beginning their ascent up the 1,335ft-tall hill, which boasts stunning views from its summit.

Maria Armstrong, Activities Co-Ordinator at Telford Hall, along with Diane Grace, the home’s receptionist, and Mel Butler, a night staff senior carer, called on their friends and families to sponsor their efforts to raise money for Help for Heroes.

In total, the group raised £390 for Help For Heroes, a charity dedicated to supporting the lives of war veterans and their families.

When asked what inspired them to take action, Maria Armstrong, who has previously climbed The Wrekin years ago, said: “We have many heroes in our care home including veterans – who we’re very proud of – and so we wanted to show our support to them all.

“We decided to raise funds for our chosen charity of the year, Help For Heroes, who provide lifelong support to people who have served in the British Armed Forces.

“We were grateful for some good weather during our walk and really enjoyed taking on the challenge together as a team.”

The Wrekin, a much-loved local landmark in East Shropshire, stands at 1,335 feet, or 407 metres – equating to a similar height to the Empire State Building. On clear days, climbers can enjoy breathtaking views spanning 17 counties from its summit, including Yorkshire to the East and Ceredigion to the West. This popular hill, just five miles west of Telford, provided a scenic and inspiring setting for the team’s charitable efforts.

In addition to the money raised from the sponsored walk, Maria carried out a bake sale at Telford Hall today (Friday, 5th July), boosting the total amount raised to £440.

The support of the local community and those who sponsored the event will allow Help For Heroes to continue delivering life-changing support to veterans.
