Colleagues at Otterburn care home have been honoured with the ‘Fundraising Group of the Year’ award at the prestigious Huntington’s Disease Association Awards.
The association’s annual event recognises and celebrates the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations supporting those affected by Huntington’s disease.
A key highlight of Otterburn care home’s fundraising efforts for the Huntington Disease Association, and the reason for the nomination and win, was the Zip Wire Challenge organised in May of last year.
Colleagues at the care home on Brandwood Park Road approached Zip World in Wales to help fulfil a dream for Patrick, a resident with Huntington’s disease and self-confessed adrenaline junkie.
They went above and beyond to ensure that Patrick’s individual care needs were addressed so he could participate in the challenge safely and enjoyably.
To prepare, the team shared helpful videos and resources with Patrick to make sure he felt ready for the day ahead.
Patrick’s successful completion of the challenge pushed boundaries, addressed obstacles faced by those affected by Huntington’s disease, and demonstrated how much can be achieved with the right support and care. Patrick and the Otterburn team raised an impressive £600 for the cause.
Otterburn care home’s award win reflects an entire year of remarkable fundraising efforts. Among the numerous initiatives organised, highlights include a Macmillan Coffee Morning, known as the Mad Hatters Tea Party, which raised approximately £150, a 3km walk for Alzheimer’s Society, generating around £100, and participation in the Great British Care Cycle Relay, raising more than £600.
Naomi Jones, Home Manager at Otterburn care home, shared:
“This experience proved that anything can be achieved with the right team, support, and determination. The sense of achievement was overwhelming—not only did we complete the activity, but we also raised funds and awareness for the Huntington’s Disease Association. It’s a special memory none of us will forget, and Patrick still talks about it all the time. Anything is achievable if you allow it to be!”
The award was presented by Ruth Sands, Head of Services at the Huntington’s Disease Association, during a ceremony that included many of the award finalists and other notable attendees dedicated to the cause.
Looking ahead, Otterburn is committed to continuing its support for the Huntington’s Disease Association. Plans are underway for a new fundraising adventure—a 9-mile hike up Snowdonia, with several senior management and executive team members joining the effort.
Otterburn supports adults living with dementia, complex mental health needs and, notably, neuro-disabilities such as Huntington’s disease and strokes.
The home features 30 large bedrooms, each with an en-suite, across three units, and recruitment is currently underway for Health Care Assistants, Registered Nurses and other healthcare and support roles.
