Portsmouth community raises £2k for local care worker

Care team and residents walk 12 miles in memory of care worker’s husband

Care workers are unsung heroes and are typically the ones taking care of everybody else – because it’s their job, it’s what they do and it’s what they are passionate about.

But just how often do we hear about the care workers being looked after, instead?

The staff of leading care provider Radis Community Care came together from two of its extra care housing services Maritime House and Brunel Court, based in Portsmouth to support one of its very own care workers as she faced a difficult time.

Jean King, care worker at Radis’ Maritime House, has faced a challenging time of late having lost her husband to a long battle with cancer.

The care team at both services were aware of Jean’s circumstances and all felt incredibly saddened, and decided to team up and do something to support her through such a difficult time.

Due to having time off work to be with her husband in his final days, the care teams took part in a 12 mile walk on what would have been Jean’s husbands 62nd birthday, and aimed to raise as much money as possible to help with Jean’s finances at this difficult time.

The walk took over eight hours to complete and both Radis staff and residents were able to raise over £1,800.

Rachel Brooks-O’Dell, regional manager at Radis Community Care expressed her pride at the team’s efforts to look out for one of their own.

She said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the team of care staff and residents that took part to raise money to support their colleague, it’s truly touching and brought a lump to my throat when I heard about their plans.

“Together, the teams stood strong to reach their goals, all to take a small amount of financial worry and pressure from Jean after sadly losing her husband.

“I’d like to thank the entire team for showing that being a care worker goes beyond the daily tasks of the day job, but a way of life.”

Jean and her family were overwhelmed by the love and support shown by the Radis colleagues, residents and community.

Matt King, Jean’s son, said of the efforts shown:

“I would like to express my gratitude and appreciate for the staff that organised this event, as well as the many staff and residents that took part in the walk.

“From ensuring that my mum was able to work hours suitable for her whilst she become a full-time carer for my dad, to organising a fundraising walk, I have never known a group of staff that care so much about their colleagues and residents.

Matt went on to say, “I am very grateful that my mum has had the excellent support that she has.”
