Salford care home resident celebrates 107th birthday

Elsie & Mayor

A Salford care home resident has celebrated reaching 107 years of age.

Elsie Goodhall has lived at Anchor’s Beechfield Lodge care home off Eccles Old Road for almost two years.

She marked the landmark occasion with a party on Thursday 25 July, with her niece and the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Cllr Tanya Burch, attending.

Fellow residents at Anchor’s Beechfield Lodge care home also joined the celebrations, with singer Helen Aylott making an appearance to serenade Elsie on her special day.

In commemoration of the special day, Elsie received a telegram from the King wishing her a happy birthday.

Announcing the big day on social media, Anchor’s Beechfield Lodge care home was aiming for Elsie to receive 100 cards. In total, she received approximately 102, as well as flowers from Light Oaks Primary School in Salford and Holyrood Nursery.

Sharon Bollesty, Home Manager at Anchor’s Beechfield Lodge care home, said: “Elsie’s secret to her long life is that she has never married or had children. She has also never smoked or drank any alcohol – she has pretty much lived a stress free life! It is a pleasure to have her with us at Beechfield Lodge as she is loved by everyone.”

Elsie was born in Salford in 1917 and grew up with her two younger brothers and parents in a grocery shop on Broad Street, which the family managed.

After attending St John Primary School, she worked for Radox and then Co-op Tea Warehouse before settling at Salford Royal Hospital where she stayed until she retired.
