Talented resident fills staff and resident’s ears with joy after piano added to Wirral care home

Leighton Court resident Kathleen ‘Kath’ Murray

A talented resident at HC-One’s Leighton Court care home, in Wallasey, Wirral, has filled up all staff and others residents’ ears with joy by playing the piano after it was recently added to the home.

Kathleen ‘Kath’ Murray moved into Leighton Court at the end of May 2024. She told Leighton Court Wellbeing Coordinators, Sophie Teasdale and Lisa Warrington, that she has always been a music enthusiast.

Kath has tap danced and would often sing in the past, and she has met some famous people, including The Beatles and Ken Dodd. HC-One learned that Kath came from a family of musical people and had been in lots of shows – several of them being at the local theatre the Floral Pavilion.

Since coming to Leighton Court, Kath still sings every day. Leighton resident, David Chesworth, recently moved into the residential, nursing and nursing dementia care home, and he brought his piano with him. After Kath found out about this, she was eager to start playing the piano.

Most days she sits at the piano and plays and she is now teaching residents and staff to tinkle the ivories on the piano too. Kath stated she does not read music but she can play by ear.

Kath Murray, resident at Leighton Court care home, commented:

“Oh, I love playing. I’ve always played. It’s a part of my life.”

Sophie Teasdale, Wellbeing Coordinator at Leighton Court care home, remarked:

“Everyday Kath’s wonderful piano playing fills all of our ears with joy! It is absolutely amazing.”
