Guests tuned into a colourful 1960s-themed garden party to help a Winchester dementia care home celebrate its 13th anniversary.
Team members at Colten Care’s St Catherines View donned hippie-style clothing and put flowers in their hair as they and residents enjoyed turning back the clock.
Favourite songs from the decade of ‘flower power’ were performed by visiting entertainer Lee Knott in a garden space specially decorated with tie dye fabric hangings.
After a dance with care staff in the afternoon sunshine, resident Peter Marsh told them: “This is really good. Thank you for dancing with me.”
And relative Hilary Bloomfield said: “Yet again, another great party put on for the residents. Everyone looks like they’ve had a great time. I certainly have.”
Home Manager Vanda Baker, who cut the anniversary cake accompanied by resident Lady Margaret Michael, said: “Our residents love music from the Sixties so we decided to have a hippie style party. It was a lovely, bright way to celebrate our anniversary and have fun.”
St Catherines View was officially opened by the then Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Barry Lipscomb, in late spring 2012.
Within a year, it was named Best Specialist Dementia Facility at the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards and won gold for Best Memory Garden at the New Homes Gardens Awards for the way its outdoor features stimulate residents’ memories.
Features include a wildlife garden, bat house and sensory space designed so that residents can continue to enjoy going outdoors.
St Catherines View is one of four dedicated dementia care homes owned and run by Colten Care, all benefiting from Admiral Nurse input in association with Dementia UK.
The other three are The Aldbury in Poole and the Outstanding-rated homes Fernhill in Ferndown and Linden House in Lymington.
