Tis the season for togetherness

Viv Stead, Recreation and Well-Being Manager, Nellsar Care Homes

Viv Stead, Recreation and Well-Being Manager at Nellsar Care Homes, shares how care homes can create meaningful connections with local communities during the festive period

The festive season presents an opportunity for care homes to strengthen ties with its local communities. By opening its doors and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, care homes can create meaningful connections that enhance the well-being of residents, while building stronger relationships within the community.

Host festive community events

Inviting local families, schools, and community groups to participate in festive gatherings at the care home is a wonderful way to create shared memories and help spread festive cheer. Hosting events such as Christmas carol concerts, seasonal craft fairs, or festive tea parties, can bring together residents, their families, and locals of all ages. These community-driven events can have a positive impact on their residents’ mental and emotional well-being.

Embrace intergenerational activities

The festive period is an ideal time to encourage intergenerational connections, blending older traditions with more modern ways of celebrating Christmas. Organising visits from nearby schools or youth groups gives residents the chance to share their experiences, stories, and holiday traditions with the younger generation. This interaction not only provides residents with a sense of belonging but also creates a chance to exchange memories which is valuable for older people as it stimulates cognitive function, helping to keep the mind active and engaged.

Involve residents’ families in festive activities

Encouraging families to participate in festive events creates a sense of togetherness and strengthens the support network around residents. By inviting family members to decorate the care home, organising special family meals, or group carol singing sessions, care homes can create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. Activities like these are fun for everyone involved and encourage laughter over shared traditions that make the season feel even more special.

Support local charities and drive community giving

Care homes can collaborate with local charities by organising donations and collecting winter necessities, such as warm clothing, food, or toys, to be distributed to those in need within the community. These initiatives not only help residents feel a greater sense of purpose but it also gives them an opportunity to make an impact on the lives of others.

Virtual events for a wider reach

In today’s digital age, virtual celebrations can allow families, near and far, to participate in festive joy. Care homes can host virtual events, such as holiday sing-alongs and live-streamed tree-lighting ceremonies, where residents and family members can connect despite physical distance. These online gatherings can help extend the festive atmosphere beyond the care home, reaching family members who may not be able to attend in person.

Spread festive cheer with community performances

Partnering with local choirs, drama groups, or music schools to bring festive performances into the care home adds a joyful and positive light on residents. Many community groups welcome the chance to perform for care home residents, bringing holiday classics, choir performances, or even small theatre productions to life.

The festive season is more than just a time for celebrations; it’s an opportunity to build a true sense of community within and around care homes. By engaging with local communities, care homes can enhance the festive experience for everyone involved, creating a shared sense of warmth and connection.
