Hyacinth House in Stapehill, Wimborne is filled with excitement as one of its residents, Gwen, continues to receive well-deserved recognition for her extraordinary contributions throughout her life. Already honoured for an incredible 60 years of service with the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), Gwen is now celebrated for her time as a member of the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War.
Her inspiring story has been included in a newly released book, Don’t Delay, Enrol Today: The Women’s Land Army in Hampshire, written by acclaimed social historian John K. Lander. With over 30 published works on social history and non-conformist church subjects, Lander personally visited Gwen to discuss her experiences and recently presented her with a copy of the published book. Witnessing Gwen receive this recognition was a proud and emotional moment for her family, fellow residents, and staff at Hyacinth House.
This isn’t Gwen’s first feature in print; her contributions were also highlighted in The Remarkable Women of the Second World War. To celebrate her incredible legacy, Hyacinth House included Gwen as the guest speaker for their December Speaker’s Corner event. During this special occasion, Gwen shared fond memories of her time in the Land Army, reflecting on the challenging but rewarding work, the close friendships she formed, and the significance of her role in supporting Britain during the war.
Adding to the event’s charm was a meticulously curated scrapbook by Gwen’s daughter-in-law, Heather. This treasure trove included original newspaper advertisements recruiting women for the Land Army, receipts, photographs, and even a delicate cotton dolly crafted by the Land Army women. The scrapbook brought history to life and captivated everyone who saw it.
The staff and residents of Hyacinth House are deeply proud of Gwen and her remarkable life story. She is an inspiration, reminding us all of the resilience, courage, and camaraderie that shaped Britain’s wartime efforts. Gwen’s story is a testament to the power of service and the enduring impact of her generation’s contributions.
