Manager of a Sheffield care home wins Knight Frank Healthcare Hero award

Luke Owens from Bupa’s Broomcroft House was recognised for his leadership during the pandemic

A care home manager from Sheffield has received a prestigious award, thanks to his commitment to improving residents’ lives.

Luke Owens, Home Manager at Bupa’s Broomcroft House, was awarded the Healthcare Hero award from Knight Frank – a renowned analyst of the health and social care sector.

Judges praised Luke for acting as an advocate for residents, recognising people as individuals with their own needs and preferences, as well as acknowledging his exceptional leadership.

At the height of the pandemic, Luke moved into the care home to provide round the clock support for colleagues and residents – including many living with dementia – who were temporarily unable to be with loved ones.

In his two years at the care home, Luke has not only built strong relationships with residents and their families – but also colleagues, as he encourages the team to go the extra mile for residents.

Speaking of his award, Luke said: “Nobody could’ve predicted what this year would have in store. It’s sometimes felt like a bit of a blur, but everyone’s pulled together to keep residents happy and entertained, whilst also giving them the best possible care.

“It means a lot to be recognised like this, especially given how hard everyone in the sector has been working. For me, it’s a reflection on the great team we’ve got here at Broomcroft. It’s something that everyone has played a part in.”

Luke was nominated for the award by Joan Elliott, Managing Director for Bupa Care Services. She added: “I’m absolutely delighted for Luke. Throughout the pandemic we’ve seen colleagues across our care homes step up to support one another and ultimately make a real difference to residents’ lives.

“Luke’s attitude has absolutely embodied this, and the fact that he moved into the home to be closer to residents is testament to his great leadership.”

Elsewhere, Luke’s commitment to residents has shone through as he has redesigned parts of the home, based on residents’ feedback, to ensure it’s as homely and comfortable as it can be. In June, he and the team renovated the home’s lounge to create a more modern and relaxing environment where residents could spend time together.

As well as receiving the physical award during a virtual ceremony, Luke also received a hamper to thank him for all his hard work.

Based near Whirlow, just outside the city of Sheffield, Bupa’s Broomcroft House cares for up to 67 residents.
