Tony Bradley MBE Reunites with Friend at Bradley Hall Care Home After 27 Years

97-year-old Tony Bradley MBE was reunited with an old friend, Diane Birks, after 27 years when Diane moved into Bradley Hall care home, named after Tony.

Tony first became a volunteer at Bradley Hall, then named Beaumont Hall, in 2017 after his wife, Renelle, moved in.

Renelle sadly passed away in 2020, but Tony continued to visit the home, volunteering to organise different activities with them as well as supporting several charities in the area.

In December 2021, Tony was ‘utterly shocked’ to receive a letter informing him that he would be honoured by HM Queen Elizabeth II in her New Year Honours. Tony was appointed MBE for his services to the community in January 2022.

The same year, the staff and residents at Beaumont Hall made the decision to rename the care home after Tony as a thank you for his kindness, hence the home was named Bradley Hall.

When 86-year-old Diane moved to Bradley Hall February 2024, she asked staff why the home was named ‘Bradley’ Hall. The staff explained that the home was named after a volunteer named Tony, telling her the story of his MBE and retirement in November 2023.

Coincidentally and much to everyone’s surprise, Diane and her husband, Bruce, had been good friends with Tony and Renelle, but hadn’t seen each other since 1997

Tony and Bruce met at college in 1973 and remained friends through their marriages and births of their children. Diane and Renelle grew close as well, and the four would catch up regularly.

Unfortunately, around 1997 the families grew apart due to their busy lives, but Diane and Tony were thrilled to hear they would be able to see each other again after 27 years.

Staff at Bradley Hall organised a special afternoon tea for the pair’s reuniting. Tony said,

‘It was amazing to see Diane again after all these years and catch up on what life has been life since we last spoke.’

Diane added, ‘It was incredible to be able to meet after 27 years, it’s just a shame that Renelle and Bruce aren’t with us to share the excitement. We had such a good afternoon catching up!’

Sarah Clark, the Home Manager at Bradley Hall, said, ‘We couldn’t believe the coincidence when Diane told us all about her friendship with Tony, and seeing them reunite after so long was a truly heart-warming moment.

‘We’re always seeing new friendships built at Bradley Hall, so it was extra special to help Diane and Tony rekindle theirs after over two decades.’

Bradley Hall is rated ‘GOOD’ by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) and offers an all-inclusive fee to give residents and their loved ones peace of mind.
