Anchors Aweigh: Family-run care home group sets sail on popular virtual world cruise series with first stop in Mexico

A family-run care home group has set sail on a mini virtual world cruise, starting its voyage in Mexico — which saw residents across its care communities celebrating the country’s native cuisine, music and wider culture.

Following its success over the past few years, Nellsar Care Homes, which operates 13 homes across Kent, Surrey and Essex, is once again taking residents on a memorable virtual trip across the world — exploring a diverse range of countries along the way.

Seeking to promote positive wellbeing through meaningful activities, Nellsar is looking to offer residents a break away from the UK and transport them to a series of desirable holiday destinations such as Mexico — with sombreros, music from a Mariachi band and expertly prepared food from its talented chefs.

As part of the mini cruise, the virtual ship will dock at a total of three countries, with the next two destinations being Egypt and Japan. Activities teams at each home have been tasked with bringing the vibrance of each country to their care community — with decorations, costumes and a healthy dose of adventurous holiday spirit.

Commenting on the virtual cruise series, Viv Stead, Recreation and Well-being Manager at Nellsar, said: “Our residents and team members were absolutely delighted when we decided to run the virtual cruise again this year. It has been such a great success over the years and injects great excitement across all of our homes. This month we visited Mexico and the food, music and party atmosphere were truly fantastic!

“We like to involve relatives in our cruise series where possible, as it encourages the exchange of postcards and photos as we make our way around the globe. It’s a great way to help our residents reminisce, with many of them being very well travelled and willing to share their happiest holiday memories.”

Commenting on the first stop of the trip, Freda Clive, a resident at Meyer House in Kent, said: “I really enjoyed the cruise to Mexico, the music and food was great but it was a bit hot for me! I loved playing dominos on the upper deck and I’m excited for our next stop in Egypt.”

Built on strong foundations, Nellsar has worked hard to build the trusted reputation of its homes and prides itself on being approachable, accountable and empathic in its relationships with the families it supports.
