One of the south’s oldest people has celebrated her 104th birthday, enjoying her daily glass of white wine among family and friends.
Pat Dartnell was naturally the centre of attention at her party at Colten Care’s New Milton home, Kingfishers, where she has lived for several years.
The former John Lewis staffer and Oakhaven charity shop volunteer welcomed friends, cousins and fellow residents for a vintage afternoon tea with live music from visiting pianist Karen Lassy Smith.
Born in South Wales in 1922 just four years after the end of the First World War, Pat grew up as the middle one of three sisters.
Her earliest memories are of the trio cycling to school and going for walks together.
Still a teenager when World War II broke out, she took part in community volunteering during the war years.
Her husband Les, to whom she was married for more than half a century, had a brother in Brockenhurst and visiting him over the years led to the couple retiring to the New Forest and realising their dream to live near the south coast.
On her 100th birthday at Kingfishers four years ago, Pat said her secrets of longevity were to stay active and optimistic, take lots of exercise and holidays aboard and indulge in a daily glass of white wine, usually before lunch.
Thanking the Kingfishers team for arranging her latest party, Pat said: “They made my day a memorable one. I didn’t expect to have such a big party. I am very grateful for all their effort and hard work to make my day extra special.”
Rose Arcellana, Companionship Team Leader at the Outstanding-rated home, said: “Pat is a lovely lady with a highly positive attitude to life and we were only too happy to help organise her special afternoon. A key highlight was the live piano performance from Karen, something that Pat had expressed as a birthday wish. The beautiful live music was the perfect soundtrack as guests chatted, laughed and shared happy memories together.”
Home Manager Jacqui Williams said: “Everyone at Kingfishers wishes Pat a very happy 104th birthday and we thank Karen for helping to make her special birthday wish come true.”
