Stefanie Ioannou, Associate Director at Shawbrook Bank and Rising Star at the Women Achieving Greatness in Social Care Awards, reflects on building a purpose-driven career in healthcare finance where empathy matters as much as capital
I didn’t set out to build a career in healthcare finance. What changed my path was understanding that financial decisions in this sector shape real lives. Early on, I realised that funding structures, lending terms and strategic conversations don’t just sit on spreadsheets — they influence the quality of care someone receives.
As an Associate Director at Shawbrook Bank, I work closely with healthcare operators navigating growth, constant change and significant challenge. Social care is not a conventional sector. It is built on trust, compassion and resilience, often under intense pressure. Workforce shortages, rising costs and increasingly complex care needs are everyday realities for operators, and those pressures demand something different from lenders — partners who bring clarity, consistency and empathy, not just capital.
Lending to healthcare begins with understanding. Walking through services, meeting managers and frontline teams, and listening to those delivering care on the ground has reinforced one simple truth: behind every financial decision is a person. Residents, families and staff all feel the impact. That perspective shapes how I work — not simply as a lender, but as a long-term partner invested in sustainability and positive outcomes.
The role of specialist lenders in healthcare has evolved significantly. Capital remains important, but it is no longer enough on its own. Operators increasingly need funders who understand the sector, take time to listen and tailor funding solutions that reflect the realities of care delivery. At Shawbrook, our focus is on supporting operators to invest in their assets, their services and their people, recognising that quality care and financial stability are closely linked. We structure funding to support long-term sustainability — not just short-term solutions — balancing commercial judgement with genuine care for outcomes.
Working with more than 50 operators across healthcare sub-sectors has given me valuable insight into what makes providers resilient. The most forward-thinking are not always the largest or fastest growing, but those with a clear sense of purpose, strong values and a willingness to engage openly. They invest in their people, communicate honestly and act early when challenges arise. That approach strengthens not only their businesses, but the care they deliver.
Being recognised as a Rising Star at the Women Achieving Greatness in Social Care Awards has prompted reflection. It represents not just technical capability, but an approach grounded in empathy, curiosity and commitment. It reflects the importance of building genuine relationships, understanding the sector deeply and caring about the ultimate impact of our work.
Within Shawbrook, I am passionate about supporting others as they develop their careers in healthcare finance. This sector needs people who combine analytical skill with emotional intelligence — individuals who understand that numbers tell only part of the story. Creating an environment where people feel supported and encouraged benefits not only teams, but the clients and communities we serve. Leadership should open doors for others, not close them.
Looking ahead, the healthcare sector will continue to face significant challenges, but also meaningful opportunity. Investment in workforce, sustainability and technology will shape the future of care. Specialist lenders have an important role in enabling that progress by staying close to operators and focusing on long-term value rather than short-term gain — recognising that financial strength and compassionate care are deeply connected.
Being recognised as a Rising Star is something I remain deeply grateful for. It reflects not just my own journey, but the people who have believed in me, challenged me and trusted me along the way. Progress in this sector is always shared, and that recognition strengthens my commitment to continue contributing positively to a sector that gives so much to so many.
