Bowling Along with Walfinch: Simone and Her Carers Redefine Home Care

Charity worker Simone and Walfinch carer Sarah are overturning the image of home care. Simone, in her late 20s, is accompanied to ten-pin bowling and the gym by Sarah Balment from Walfinch West Suffolk.

“I am not what people think of as the typical care client, and the care services I use are not what many people think home care is about, but Sarah and I are changing people’s ideas about care every day,” says Simone.

“I love physical activities, and they are very good for my physical and mental health. Sarah supports me to access them, so I live a normal life – it’s just a bit different,” says Simone, who has had help from professional carers since she left home for university aged 17.

Simone, who now works as a volunteer for charities, helping service users ensure their voices are heard and that they get what they need, was born with a neurological condition and is also neurodiverse. She says social care helped her complete her two degrees, in sociology and health science.

Fitness, fun and flexibility

“Sarah takes to me to the gym, where she helps me with leg exercises and getting on to the fitness bike – my favourite gym exercise,” says Simone. “It’s a gym session combined with a support group, where we all talk to each other, so it’s good for my physical health, mental health and social life.

“The Walfinch carers also do arts and crafts with me at home and help me practice computer games, puzzles and board games.  I find it very cathartic and it means when I have friends over for games sessions it’s easier for us all.”

The Stowmarket-based Walfinch West Suffolk home care service provides flexible care to suit Simone’s life style.  “I have learned how carers can help me, and Walfinch allows me to flex my care according to changes in my life,” she says.

Simone’s carer Sarah Balment says: “We go to the bowling alley and play together, and we go out for walks, and cook together – and although I don’t join in at the gym with Simone, she meets some regulars and it’s great to chat with them.

“I can see that our activities are making her stronger.  Active home care, for people of any age, can help clients live fuller lives and increase their wellbeing.  This is the kind of reward that means I love my job – and seeing my clients.”

Simone says: “The image of home care needs to be broadened to take into account people like me and my carers.  It’s a long a long haul but I believe we can do it, and we are all proud to be working towards that.”
