Nellsarvision: Family-run care home group hosts Eurovision-inspired singing contest

A family-run care home group has hosted a Eurovision-inspired singing competition – showcasing its commitment to engaging, fun, and inclusive activities for its residents.

Nellsar Care Homes recently invited its 13 homes across Kent, Surrey and Essex to stretch their vocal cords, whip out the musical instruments and get singing, whilst encouraging fancy dress and the use of props.

Judged by Kevin Walsh, a professional entertainer of over 30 years, the aptly named ‘Nellsarvision’ sought to promote positive well-being through meaningful, musical activities. Kevin, who provides regular entertainment to the homes, said: “I really enjoyed viewing all of the video entries numerous times as they were all brilliant in their own way. It was a very hard decision to pick an overall winner.”

The first prize of £250 was awarded to Hengist Field Care Home, in Sittingbourne, for the home’s rendition of The Foundations’ 1969 hit, ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, which Kevin described as a “fantastic, feel-good number”, where the whole home displayed “fun and energy”.

Lukestone Care Home, in Maidstone, claimed the second prize of £150 with a summer-themed performance of Doris Day’s 1956 hit, ‘Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)’,

which included both loved ones and relatives.

While Lulworth House Residential Care Home, also in Maidstone, secured the third spot, receiving £100 for its take on Madness’ 1982 classic, ‘Our House’, which Kevin praised for its “humorous, personalised lyrics” and a tour of the home.

Five runners-up were also chosen, including Loose Valley, St Winifreds, Sonya Lodge, The Old Downs, and Princess Christian Care Home – with all remaining homes also being recognised for their contributions.

Nellsar continues to set a benchmark for excellence in care, with a focus on activities that promote engagement, happiness, and a sense of community among residents and team members.

Commenting on the singing contest, Viv Stead, Recreation and Well-Being Manager at Nellsar, said: “Just like the Eurovision competition itself, Nellsarvision was packed with energy, fun and genuine talent – there wasn’t a ‘nil point’ in sight! We all know how incredibly beneficial music is for the soul and it was amazing to see everyone get involved. Many of our homes already have established choirs, such as the St Winifreds Songbirds, Lukestone Larks, and The Sunshine Choir. Overall, it was a great way to have a bit of fun and Kevin did a great job as the judge. We’ll definitely be doing it again next year!”

Built on strong foundations, Nellsar has worked hard to build the trusted reputation of its homes and prides itself on being approachable, accountable and empathic in its relationships with the families it supports.
