In tune as care home’s busking fun raises dementia awareness

Linden House resident Liz Jones and, ukulele in hand, Companionship Team member Phil Wilkinson on the dementia care home’s busking trip in Lymington.

Music lovers at a Lymington care home took to the streets to entertain passers-by while raising awareness of dementia in the community.

The party from Colten Care’s Linden House, a dedicated dementia care home in the town, staged a busking performance that featured some of the residents’ favourite tunes played on the ukulele.

Lead strummer Companionship Team member Phil Wilkinson was joined by resident Liz Jones and even the home’s adopted pet dog Moxie.

Phil and Liz set up to sing and play, complete with speaker and microphone, in the High Street outside St Thomas’s Church.

The playlist included Bring Me Sunshine, The Everly Brothers’ All I Have to Do is Dream, The Beatles’ Let it Be and the Elvis Presley hit Blue Suede Shoes.

As well as the music, the team handed out small blue and yellow ‘forget-me-not’ gifts crocheted by residents and reflecting the floral symbol of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Sian Harris, Companionship Team Leader at Linden House, said: “Liz clearly enjoyed the afternoon, as did colleagues at a local solicitors’ firm. They were clapping from their office windows and came down kindly offering water, tea and coffee, saying how much it had made their day hearing the music. Moxie drew quite a lot attention for her ‘forget-me-not’ collar worn on the trip. It was great afternoon raising awareness and smiles for a cause especially close to us at Linden house.”
