Data-driven leadership

Janine Graham, National Head of Quality and Governance at Four Seasons Health Care Group, shares her insights on the role of data-driven leadership in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

As someone with a background in Home Management, my approach to leading quality improvement across Four Seasons Health Care Group has been shaped by both practical experience and a deep understanding of care dynamics. I firmly believe that quality in care involves every team member and focuses on creating positive experiences for our residents. My goal is to ensure that whatever quality strategies we implement are easy to understand and effective. Delivering quality care is a shared responsibility, and we can only make meaningful differences by working together.

Impact of the Care Quality Dashboard

The implementation of our Care Quality Dashboard has significantly transformed resident safety and overall care standards in our homes. These dashboards were designed to provide actionable insights, rather than just data for its own sake. By analyzing this data, we can identify areas where additional training or coaching is needed. We also develop new materials that help family members better understand their loved ones’ care needs and associated risks.

For example, one initiative that emerged from our data insights is “For the Love of Cake,” which creatively engages residents and staff while addressing important care topics. We have also revised our company policies based on these insights, driving meaningful changes in our operations.

Creativity in Leadership

Creativity plays a pivotal role in my leadership style, especially when it comes to engaging our teams with initiatives like the “Teeth Party” and “For the Love of Cake.” I’ve discovered that a creative approach fosters higher engagement levels among our care home teams and their families. When serious messages are delivered creatively, they resonate more effectively.

For instance, with a challenging subject like sepsis, we needed to create a safe space for discussion. The “Teeth Party” allowed us to approach this sensitive topic in a light-hearted manner while emphasizing the serious implications of sepsis and ways to prevent it. By hosting a gathering with homemade treats, we introduced important discussions about dental health and its connection to sepsis prevention. This initiative significantly raised awareness and led to increased training for our team.

Recently, we launched another creative initiative, “For the Love of Cake,” which aims to reduce instances of choking through engaging images and messages. It’s an exciting way to promote health while keeping our residents and their families engaged.

 Balancing Data and Compassion

While a data-driven approach is essential, I always ensure that personal, compassionate care remains at the forefront of our efforts. Data serves as a valuable guide, highlighting areas that require action, but our residents and their experiences are always my primary focus.

Implementing changes based on data insights is driven by my passion for enhancing our residents’ quality of life. It’s a privilege to deliver care and support our teams, and I never lose sight of that commitment.

Rewarding Outcomes

The most rewarding outcome of our quality and safety improvement efforts, especially during the challenging sales process, has been the reduction of serious incidents and safeguarding our residents from harm. Upskilling our teams before their new journey with us has also had a profound impact. Witnessing the positive changes in both the team dynamics and the lives of our residents has been incredibly fulfilling.

Regardless of external challenges, my focus, and that of my team, remains on enhancing the resident experience. Together, we are committed to continuous improvement, leveraging data to drive innovation while ensuring that compassionate care remains at the heart of what we do.
