Stop detaining people with learning disabilities in mental health hospitals, says Turning Point

Responding to the publication of the draft Mental Health Bill, Ivan Olbrechts, Quality Manager at social care organisation Turning Point, said today (Wednesday):

“Turning Point supports a significant number of people with a learning disability who have previously been held in mental health hospitals.

“Detention in hospital offers them no clear therapeutic benefit. People need local options and specialist services, and should not be kept far from home and family.

“Substantial investment is vital in real community-based alternatives. This is the key to ensuring no-one with a learning disability or autism is detained unnecessarily which, as Jeremy Hunt rightly says, is a human rights scandal.”
