Holdingham Grange is home to many vibrant souls, and it is Sanjay Vidanapathairana’s profound responsibility and passion to craft activities that resonate with everyone. As the beating heart of the establishment, Sanjay has revolutionised the role of the activities coordinator with his unwavering dedication and innovation.

Sanjay’s transition from education, working with children with complex needs, to the care sector, might seem a vast leap to some. “My background demanded confidence, adaptability, and an innate understanding of individual needs. It felt only natural to channel these skills towards serving those in vulnerable positions at Holdingham,” Sanjay reflects.

His recipe for success is rooted in his philosophy: activities tailored to individual needs, built on a foundation of trust. “It’s crucial to be honest and adaptable. By building trust with residents, staff, and relatives, it’s easier to engage them and make them an integral part of the activities,” he adds.

Ensuring the residents, especially the 62.5% afflicted with Dementia, find meaning and joy in their daily lives requires Sanjay’s versatility. From assisting with meals and reviewing care plans to planning events, each day is different but equally significant. The integration of modern technology, like touch-screen sensory tablets, is testament to Sanjay’s innovative streak. These devices provide engaging games, puzzles, and audiobooks, catering especially to residents with cognitive impairments.

An important facet of Sanjay’s work is his close collaboration with residents and their families. Regular review meetings and direct verbal feedback have resulted in activities that evolve with the residents’ desires and needs. Unsurprisingly, music sessions, bingo, and day trips emerge as favourites. Sanjay elucidates, “Music has the power to evoke core memories, especially in dementia patients. Bingo and day trips, on the other hand, foster a communal spirit and a sense of independence.”

The inclusion of cultural events and interactions with the local community further accentuates the holistic approach of Holdingham Grange. From festive celebrations to fundraisers, the doors are always open for the community, forging a deep sense of belonging amongst the residents.

Looking forward, Sanjay is brimming with ideas. “I want to introduce some of our residents to our very popular pantomimes, and I’m particularly excited about our small bookshop and tuck shop project. It’s not just about keeping our residents occupied; it’s about offering them a sense of ownership and purpose,” he shares.

The pandemic threw unprecedented challenges, but Sanjay’s resourcefulness remained undiminished. When external events ground to a halt, he motivated the staff to produce an annual pantomime, drawing immense appreciation. Moreover, he orchestrated a charity dinner, raising a commendable £4,500 for a local air ambulance.

Sanjay’s journey within Glenholme and Holdingham Grange, punctuated by his diligent training and continuous learning, has been nothing short of inspiring. His words encapsulate the essence of his role: “Seeing the impact of my work on the residents and knowing that, for some, we’re their only family makes this incredibly rewarding.”

To many, Sanjay is more than an activities coordinator; he’s a beacon of hope, creativity, and dedication.
