Around the UK there are many unsung heroes who are caring for loved ones with dementia which is why the National Dementia Carers’ Day was established to celebrate the good work that they do.
The day, which was established seven years ago was the brainchild of SweetTree Home Care Services and Alzheimer’s Society and is supported this year by charity Dementia Carers Count.
This year’s National Dementia Carers Day takes place on Monday 12 September and aims to recognise and support the unpaid carers who carry out this crucial role.
Corinne Burgin, Deputy Manager for the Dementia Service at SweetTree commented: “We’re delighted to once again be supporting the NDCD and working with Dementia Carers Count to help raise awareness of the great work being done by thousands of informal and family dementia carers every day.
In past years, we have raised awareness and had incredible stories shared, and this year offers an opportunity to recognise the daily struggles and personal sacrifices made in the community, all for the benefit of those with dementia.”
This year’s NDCD is an opportunity to recognise the great work these people do and highlight the innovative support they provide every single day – which often goes unnoticed.
Corinne continues: “We want to spread the word about the good work of carers who are looking after someone with dementia so we are encouraging people to share their stories, recognise a dementia carer you may know and support the NDCD. We can’t wait to hear your stories! Please register as a NDCD supporter to receive regular updates.”
Steve Dubbins, Director of Services at Dementia Carers Count says: “It is essential that the vital work of family dementia carers is recognised and supported. Over 80% of carers who responded to our recent survey had reached crisis point at least once. We have recently introduced a 24-hour text service, and on Monday 12th September, we will launch a new telephone support service available Mon-Fri from 9am to 5pm. We also offer online and face to face support sessions to help carers cope and take care of themselves.
“We are pleased to once again support NDCD and work with SweetTree to help make sure the important work of dementia carers is recognised. We also want to let carers know that support is available.”
Support organisations, businesses, charities and community groups are also encouraged to get involved by holding awareness events to help signpost local sources of advice and support, and to share the details using #NDCD2022. You can also display the National Dementia Carers’ Day logo on our company website, notice board or event invitations.”
