Cycle 2 Care

A new employment opportunity from My Homecare, for non-drivers and individuals who are also looking to improve their overall wellbeing and health.

As a business we have turned away good carers because they did not have a driving licence, as visits can be too far apart for carers to walk between. It was frustrating having individuals wanting to work alongside us and having to turn them away so we needed a solution.

This is where our idea of employing a team of E-Bikers was first visualised and swiftly rolled out. The idea of being able to offer non drivers an opportunity to ride and to join our team caring for people in the community was a breakthrough. We particularly liked the impact this would have on the individual’s mental health and overall wellbeing.

Mental Health is something we take very seriously within our company, having our own in house “Wellness at Work” scheme already we knew this would work alongside this perfectly. We launched Cycle 2 Care in April 2022 and had the support of our Local MP Richard Holden who officially launched the innovative idea.

Working with our team and community to beat the rise in fuel prices whilst providing this unique employment opportunity was great. We had a lot of interest in our Cycle 2 Care Initiative immediately, so with the warmer weather fast approaching we got our first team of cyclists started.

New Cycle 2 Care team members are all provided with their own E Bike, safety equipment and training. All they need to bring is a caring nature and a warm smile.

We encourage our team members to use the bikes in the leisure time too. My Homecare management are all very familiar with the positive effects exercise can have on our wellbeing, so we like to see our carers taking advantage of this.

Cycle 2 Care has been a success. Over the last 5 months we have rolled out the initiative in three of our branches who are based in County Durham, Newcastle and Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Achieving this means we have increased capacity for our business and have employed a team of twelve “Cycle 2 Care” carers. We hope this number will continue to increase at a steady rate and we are optimistic for more of the same success in the coming months.

Not forgetting the added bonus of reducing our carbon footprint and all the savings made on the rising fuel prices were just the icing on the cake for our new initiative.
