The Care Workers’ Charity – Looking back and moving forward

Karolina Gerlich, Chief Executive, The Care Workers Charity

At the Care Workers’ Charity we are continually grateful for the help we have received from our supporters, sponsors, funders and trustees. Without them, we would not be able to conduct this vital work. Care workers are part of the bedrock of our society, and in 2021 we were able to expand the programmes we offer to better support them.

Over the past twelve months, we were able to achieve the following:

  • 1,002 Covid-19 Emergency Fund grants awarded, with a total value of £614,992
  • 775 Crisis grants, with a total value of £353,037
  • 68 grants awarded towards mental wellbeing and health support, with a total value of £84,950
  • 40 people enrolled in our new Mental Health First Aider programme; the total value of the training was £11,800
  • The total value of all grants in 2021 was £1,064,779

Our Covid-19 Emergency Fund is a continuation of support established in 2020, and we will continue to award these grants in 2022. Our Crisis grants are an ongoing fund that we will also continue throughout 2022. Last year in February, we launched a new programme supporting the mental health and wellbeing of care workers through one to one therapy. At the end of last year, we also started funding mental health first aid training for care workers. We are delighted to be able to contribute to the professional development and wellbeing of care workers, who navigate stressful environments with a lot of responsibilities. With this programme, we hope to teach care workers skills that will enable them to support the mental health of their colleagues and clients. We will continue with this programme throughout 2022.

In 2021 we continued campaigning around the professionalisation of the social care workforce. We strongly believe the government should introduce further measures to reform the sector, and that the government and the public should recognise care workers as the skilled professionals that they are. We will continue to campaign around these issues in 2022, until we see a substantial improvement in the perception and recognition of care workers.

The outbreak of the Omicron variant has continued into 2022 and has disrupted the lives of so many care workers. Once again, the course of the pandemic has changed the landscape care workers find themselves in, and it is truly heart-breaking that so many care workers still need our help. One day, we hope we will be in a position where we as a charity are no longer needed. Until then, we ask you to support us as much as possible.

To help us reach even more social care workers in crisis, please drop us an email at info@thecwc.org.uk to discuss partnering with us and/or donate here
