Reigniting the passion for nursing

Tee Ngundu, Community Psychiatric Nurse, Catalyst Care Group

Catalyst Care Group provides CQC-regulated complex care and specialist health and social care staffing solutions. Here their Community Psychiatric Nurse, Tee Ngundu, outlines why actively caring is the heartbeat of holistic care.

In the dynamic landscape of healthcare, “actively caring” remains a fundamental principle, embodying a holistic approach that integrates empathy, compassion, and proactive engagement. This principle is especially crucial in nursing, where the combination of technical proficiency and human connection significantly enhances patient outcomes and experiences.

Back to Basics

During my nurse training, I learned foundational principles that have guided my career and remain integral to my practice. One of the most valuable lessons is that nursing is a calling, not merely a job. It involves selfless dedication to prioritising the needs of others. The essence of nursing lies in the satisfaction derived from positively impacting another person’s life, advocating on their behalf, being attentive to their needs, and communicating with kindness.

Nursing transcends monetary value; it’s worth is measured by the profound impact it has on others’ lives. Actively caring entails demonstrating genuine care, concern, and compassion, which encompasses:

1.Recognition through Observations

Noticing when someone might need help or support. This must be done delicately and non-judgmentally

2. Empathy

Understanding and sharing the feelings of others and conveying genuine interest, honesty, and avoiding judgment

3. Action

Taking steps to provide comfort or prevent harm. Recognising that withholding action can cause harm and erode trust in the long term.

Florence Nightingale encapsulated this commitment when she said:

Put in speech bubble:

“Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses… we must be learning all our lives.”

Florence Nightingale

This statement underscores the continuous nature of learning and improvement in nursing. As professionals, we must humbly seek feedback, reflect, and seize opportunities to enhance our skills, thereby offering better care to those in our charge.

Commitment and Consistency

Actively caring requires unwavering commitment and consistency. Nurses must embody care, concern, and compassion in every interaction. By remaining enthusiastic and empathetic, we create a nurturing environment that promotes healing and well-being.

The Impact of Actively Caring

Actively caring fosters strong therapeutic relationships, enhances patient satisfaction, and leads to better health outcomes. Patients who feel genuinely cared for are more likely to adhere to treatment plans, engage in their care, and experience lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Moreover, active caring enriches the nursing profession, fostering a culture of compassion and dedication. It reminds nurses of the profound impact they can have on their patients’ lives, reinforcing the core values of nursing.

Conclusion

Actively caring is the heartbeat of compassionate nursing. By integrating recognition, empathy, and action into their practice, nurses profoundly influence their patients’ health and well-being. This holistic approach not only enhances patient outcomes but also elevates the practice of nursing, reaffirming its essential role in the healthcare system. As we reignite our passion and return to the basics, let us embody the spirit of Florence Nightingale, continually learning and striving to provide the best care possible.
