Melbourn care home residents enjoy visit from rare animals

Residents at Southwell Court care home in Melbourn enjoyed a visit from some rare animals. The home on Hinkins Close in the village welcomed Herrings Green Activity Farm in Wilstead. They were treated to some close-up interaction with rabbits, guinea pigs, a Northern Hawk owl and even a skunk!

Seeing the animals close up was a really wonderful experience for the residents and staff, bringing back lots of memories of pets that they had in their younger years – though none as exotic as some of the ones on this visit.

One resident, Peggy, who has been at the home since November 2023 and is registered blind, happily cuddled a guinea pig and held an owl in a glove said; “It was really lovely. The guinea pig sat quite happily on my lap and I was able to stroke him – it was really quite soothing!”

Lisa King is the manager at Southwell Court: “We always like to try something different for our residents. You can see by their faces that they really enjoyed seeing and cuddling up with the animals. Not many of us have had the opportunity to see or hold an owl on our arm, so that was lovely to watch.”

Southwell Court provides care and support to residents in Melbourn and Royston. They are holding an Open Day and Craft Fair on Saturday 24th August from 2pm, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Anyone wishing to have a stall at the fair or for more information about the care and support available should contact the home on 01763 750006.
