In recognition of World Environment Day, Frome Nursing Home organised a series of
community-driven activities aimed at enhancing the local environment and fostering a sense of
unity among residents (fondly referred to as family members) and team members.
Family members and team members participated in a community litter picking activity around
surrounding areas of the nursing home, in the spirit of keeping our local community clean and
tidy.
For those who preferred not to participate in the litter pick, there was a choice of planting
seedlings in our garden. For those with mobility issues or those who unfortunately are not able
to go outside, our team members visited their rooms to make sure everybody got a chance to
plant some seedlings to be included.
Additionally, the care home introduced a book swap as part of our World Environment Day
activities. Team members brought in their old books to exchange with each other, as well as
engaging in conversations around literature with the family members. Initiatives like book
swaps promote recycling and reuse, decreasing the demand for new resources, and minimising
landfill contributions in the local Somerset area.
World Environment Day is also about appreciating nature. A connection to nature is
particularly important for family members on a Dementia or complex journey, as being
outdoors can evoke a feeling of positive memories and a sense of normalcy, helping residents
feel more connected to their past experiences. Activities like gardening and other outdoor
activities have therapeutic benefits, such as improving mental clarity and reducing cognitive
fatigue.
Frome Nursing Home is a care home who supports individuals living with complex needs based
in Somerset, committed to providing a supportive environment for our family members. As
part of our ethos of a continuation of, we believe in fostering a vibrant community where
everyone can contribute and thrive.
