Midlands nurse wins national senior manager award for autism and learning disabilities

Amy Childs, Consultant Nurse with the Danshell Group, has received national recognition as a winner at the prestigious National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards 2017.

The awards ceremony was hosted by actress Sally Phillips to celebrate excellence in the support of people with learning disabilities and autism, and to pay tribute to those who excel in providing quality care.

Amy won the Senior Manager Award, and is considered a true national champion for making a positive impact on people’s lives. The judges were full of praise for the outstanding contribution Amy has made to the people she supports: “Amy demonstrated the ability to improve the quality and services she worked with. She has achieved an outstanding rating from the CQC, which demonstrates the high level and quality of care. What particularly impressed us is her desire to influence how the community understands and supports people with a learning disability.”

Amy said of her win: “It is such an honour to win this amazing award, and I am delighted to accept it on behalf of all of my colleagues who work with such dedication for the people we support.

“The most satisfying part of my job is empowering people and nurturing their life-skills so they are able to live independently or at home with family and friends. Making the difference in even one person’s life makes all the effort and dedication this career requires more than worth it.”

Allan Bailey, Director of Quality and Governance at Danshell, said:  “We are incredibly proud of Amy and this award is extremely well-deserved, reflecting her dedication and commitment to the nursing profession. Many people we support with learning disabilities and autism have thrived under her care, gaining a better and more fulfilled quality of life.”

The Danshell Group was also nominated for other awards, including the Employer of People with a Disability Award and the Employer Award. Wast Hills Hospital was also shortlisted for the Making a Difference Award and Sports Coordinator for Danshell’s North East region, Johnathan Whitwell, was a runner up in the Sporting Chance Award.
